DMC Announces New Name and Upcoming Project – Amik Hosts the Olympics: Canada and the 1976 Summer Games

July 17, 2026

TORONTO, ON – Defining Moments Canada (DMC) is entering an exciting new chapter.

The digital heritage organization formerly known as Defining Moments Canada (DMC) is announcing its revitalization under a new name: Shared Histories Canada (SHC).

The change reflects the organization’s growth over the past several years and its expanding commitment to helping students, educators, and the general public explore the many stories that have shaped our country. From an organization focused on examining pivotal moments in Canadian history through diverse stories, SHC has evolved into a collaborative educational hub that prioritizes understanding our histories through authentic voices and lived experiences. This nuanced exploration of people, perspectives, and experiences that make up our shared past will result in a deeper and more informed interpretation of our present and future.

“This rebrand represents far more than a new name,” says Anna Goldsworthy, Director of Projects & Curation. “It reflects how our work has grown, as well as our strengthened dedication to making everyone’s history accessible, inclusive, and engaging through our wide variety of free innovative resources. Shared Histories Canada better captures our mission of bringing together varied perspectives and creating opportunities for meaningful dialogue.”

This announcement marks just the beginning. A broader rollout of the Shared Histories Canada brand, including a refreshed visual identity, new website, and expanded educational resources, will take place later this summer, just in time for the start of the new school year. We are eager to continue working with our partners, contributors, and supporters to demonstrate the significant impact that engaging and accessible historical resources, created through genuine collaboration, can have on our ability to comprehend current circumstances.

A Golden Opportunity to Explore Canada’s Olympic History

Alongside its new name, Shared Histories Canada is proud to kick off its rebrand with a new project exploring a key international moment for Canada: Amik Hosts the Olympics: Canada and the 1976 Summer Games.

Marking the 50th anniversary of the Montreal Olympics, Amik Hosts the Olympics invites audiences to step up to the plate and explore the legacy of the first Olympic Games ever hosted in Canada. The project highlights many remarkable firsts from the 1976 Games, including the debut of several women’s sporting categories, Canada’s hosting of the first Paralympic Games in the Americas, and the stories of athletes whose achievements helped redefine who could compete on the world stage. Beyond athletics, the project asks what it meant for Canada and Canadians to be hosting the world in this moment – how it impacted domestic affairs and perceptions, as well as international.

As fans celebrate the conclusion of the FIFA World Cup, Amik Hosts the Olympics promises to keep the spirit of the games alive, offering a chance to dive into the invigorating stories behind one of the country’s greatest sporting milestones. From athletics to socio-political contexts, every article, microhistory, StoryMap, and teaching resource is designed to help readers uncover the many ways in which sport can shape a nation.

Amik Hosts the Olympics is generously funded by the Government of Canada’s Department of Canadian Heritage.

This latest project reflects Shared Histories Canada’s continued commitment to creating timely, engaging educational resources that help Canadians better understand the stories that connect us all. While the name may have changed, SHC remains steadfast in its mission to provide free, bilingual content that invites educators, students, and curious minds everywhere to explore Canada’s past and the stories that shape our future.
